RV and camper mattresses: sizes, cut corners and how to measure
The bed in a trailer or motorhome is built to the room, not to a mattress. That is why the standard one you bought does not fit.
The sizes you will meet
| Size | Width × length |
|---|---|
| RV King | 72 × 80 in (183 × 203 cm)1 |
| RV Short King | 72 × 75 in (183 × 191 cm)1 |
| RV Queen | 60 × 80 in (152 × 203 cm)1 |
| RV Short Queen | 60 × 75 in (152 × 191 cm)1 |
| RV Full | 53 × 75 in (135 × 191 cm)1 |
| RV Three-Quarter | 48 × 75 in (122 × 191 cm)1 |
| RV Bunk | 28–35 × 75–80 in (71–89 × 190–203 cm)1 |
| RV Twin | 25 × 75–80 in (64 × 190–203 cm)1 |
An RV short queen is 60 × 75 in (152 × 191 cm)1; a home queen is 60 × 80 in (152 × 203 cm)2. Same width, a hand shorter. An RV king is 72 × 80 in (183 × 203 cm)1 — narrower than a home king, which is 76 × 80 in (193 × 203 cm)2.
RV bunk mattresses have no standard size and vary from one RV to the next1: measure every bunk.
How to measure an RV bed
- Width and length inside the platform's lip, at both ends; keep the smaller numbers.
- Each cut corner: along the width, then along the length. Both foot corners are often cut the same, but check.
- Thickness: if the bed is under a slide-out or a cabinet, measure the clearance with the slide in.
- Measure twice, in two places. Walls in an RV are not square.
Rounded corners and hinges
Some beds round the corners instead of cutting them: hold a plate or a lid in the corner until it matches and measure its radius.
A bed that has to fold to let a slide-out retract needs a hinged mattress: give the maker the distance from the head to the fold. See templates for the hinged drawing.
